Kariega Game
Reserve

Sanctuary to abundant game and wildlife such as lion,
elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino, hippo, hyena,
giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, waterbuck and a
variety of antelope, as well as a myriad of bird
species, including nesting Martial, Crowned and Fish
Eagles, this 6000 hectare private game reserve is a
must, for those seeking the retreat and the thrill of
the great outdoors and an African Safari vacation of a
lifetime.
 
Set high above the spectacular Kariega River Valley, you
cannot get closer to nature than in this wondrous
African wilderness, in the heart of the 1820 Settler
Country, with its rich historical heritage. The golden
beaches of Kenton-on-Sea are less than 15 minutes away.
 
Kariega offers luxury game lodge accommodation,
architectural award winning lodges and a host of
activities, such as; game drives, hiking, fishing, bird
watching, canoeing, mountain biking and the ever famous
river cruises on the Kariega Queen. Only 80 minutes east
of Port Elizabeth, a visit to KARIEGA GAME RESERVE
should be considered a natural extension of your trip
along South Africa's famous 'Garden Route', between Cape
Town and Port Elizabeth.
TYPICAL STAY: There is much to see and
do at Kariega, and for an experience of a lifetime at
one of the most popular game lodges in the Eastern Cape,
we recommend a stay of at least two nights.
Due to the diversity of activities on offer at Kariega,
anything from 2 to 5 nights can be enjoyed, however, a
minimum 2 night stay is highly recommended for your
ultimate safari experience.
Arrival time at the reserve is 12h30 for lunch. Check in
either immediately or at 14h00. After lunch you can
relax and take in the magnificent views from your chalet
or luxury suite.
At 16h00 you are collected by an experienced Ranger in
an open vehicle and you set out into the reserve for an
evening safari. Kariega is home to abundant bird life and
game and you will enjoy wonderful sightings of Lion,
Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, hippo, hyena, Giraffe, Zebra
and numerous antelope species. Sundowners are served in
the tranquil surroundings of the African Bushveld and
you then return to the Lodge where you can unwind in
front of warm log fires and enjoy sumptuous cuisine.
Awaken to the beauty of Africa and depart at 06h00 for a
combined game drive and river cruise meandering down the
Kariega River.
Enjoy a late breakfast at approximately 09h00, upon your
return to the Lodge. Between breakfast and lunch you can
simply relax or choose between a host of additional
activities:
• Numerous hiking trails, guided or unguided
• Game viewing on mountain bikes
• Canoeing safari on the Kariega River
After lunch you can enjoy a siesta and at 16h00 you once
again depart on a game drive, followed by dinner in your
Lodge or outdoor boma. Check-out is approximately 10h00.

Game Drives
Morning and evening game drives in open vehicles with
experienced rangers, where you will enjoy wonderful
sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippo,
giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope species. Night
drives are also very popular and can be arranged.

River Cruises
During one of your morning game drives, you will enjoy a
memorable cruise down the Kariega River on the “Kariega
Queen” and enjoy the tranquility of nature, whilst
viewing the wonderful bird life and game along the river.

Hiking
For hiking enthusiasts, Kariega’s trails are a must.
Walk safely amongst more than 25 species of game and
wonderful bird life on the non-dangerous section of the
reserve.

Mountain Biking
For energetic guests, mountain bikes are available for
your enjoyment. Enjoy the freedom of viewing game whilst
taking a ride in the pristine Bushveld, for an
unforgettable African bush adventure.

Canoeing
Take a leisurely paddle down the Kariega River and spot
our nesting Fish Eagles.

Fly-fishing
This is a haven for fly fishermen. Enjoy tranquil and
picturesque surroundings whilst fishing for your prize
in the well stocked Kariega River.

Swimming
For water-babies or those just wanting to cool off from
the hot African sun, dive into the river and revel in
the beautiful river pools surrounded by pristine
forests. For the less adventurous, relax at the
sun-splashed communal pools.
