1. Avoid walking in small
groups in remote places, unless with a guide.
2. Try not to carry a handbag or backpack. Rather carry
a small purse, money belt or bag close to your body.
3. Avoid carrying large amounts of money. (R200 is a lot
here!)
4. Never leave small valuable items such as jewelry,
watches, portable radios, clothing, purses or cameras
within reach of an open window. (Not even if you have
burglar bars). Also do not leave valuable items in view
in your car. Car windows are broken here for items that
you might think worthless.
5. Do not leave clothes on the washing line overnight.
6. Never leave your luggage unattended.
7. Avoid elaborate displays of expensive jewelry,
cameras and other valuables. In fact, try to leave it at
home, or at the very least, in the hotel safe. The Wild
Coast has a inclination to reduce material objects to
junk, and that's just the weather!
8. Steer clear of dark, isolated areas at night and park
in well lit areas only. Bring a torch.
9. Beware of over-friendly strangers trying to distract
you in a helpful manner. Typically, a stranger will
approach while one is filling up with petrol or while
waiting in a car. A quick grab may happen while
occasionally another person will attempt to open a car
door while you are distracted.
10. Be aware of your surroundings and persons around
you. Seek help if threatened or uncomfortable. Most
people in Pondoland are honest and concerned about the
town's reputation. People will go out of their way to
help you here.
11. Its not called the Wild Coast for nothing. Exercise
caution when using/enjoying our natural resources:
a) River :- although the river may appear to be flat and
calm, it isn't. Extremely strong currents make it
imperative that all normal safety precautions are
observed at all times especially in regard to anchors
and paddles.
b) Sea :– beware of freak waves, tides, currents, loose
& slippery rocks;
c) Hikes :– wear proper hiking shoes. Trails are
generally slippery when damp and there are many unmarked
paths which may get you lost;
d) Do not attempt THE GAP unless conditions are perfect.
Strong winds and mist make this path very dangerous.
WHILE WALKING AROUND PORT ST JOHNS, IT IS HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED THAT YOU EMPLOY A GUIDE FROM THE TOURISM
OFFICE (or from one of the accommodation places) as
petty theft, muggings and robbery are on the increase
again. Check on the conditions around 2nd Beach when you
get into town.
